Phantasy Star IV Review for Sega Genesis

Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium as it was fully called is a role-playing game for the Sega Genesis or Sega Mega Drive. The game was released in 1993 and was a big success in the series, I can remember my older brother playing this game along with the other Phantasy Star games and this was always one of my favorites.

Like most role-playing games this one featured turn based combat as well as some other nice features one being “Macros” where you could program the attack sequence. Programming the macro means you could set up various attacks or combos for certain enemies or bosses.

The magna-style cutscenes added quite a bit of detail to the game as well and I though brought it to life. The overall graphics and music in the game were great and kept you in tune when playing. There was a large cast of characters as well as weapons and armor to equipt your heroes with.

The storyline follows a young bounty hunter named Chaz Ashley along with his friends, they soon find out an evil in the land and are soon on their way to fighting it. The classic story of most role-playing games but either way this one is a must to play.

You’re absolutely right - the graphics on this game are outstanding, especially during the combat scenes. The interface used during fights seems to look better graphically than Final Fantasy titles released around the same time in North America. The great thing about games in this genre is while the story technically stays the same, enough gets changed to give each game a fresh feel.
