Growing up with the Mattel Intellivision

Snafu, Burger Time, Sea Battle, Word Fun, Utopia, Frog Bog, Thin Ice, and of course Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man were many titles enjoyed by my brothers and I while growing up. I can remember sitting down with my brothers and or friends playing these games on Friday evenings after school was over. We would choose a game and blow the dust out of it, slam it into the Intellivision and cross our fingers hoping that it would boot up.

Once we had it going we’d grab some chips, pop and start gaming, to be honest seems like nothing has changed considering last weekend it was my friends and I sitting around drinking beer and playing Super Smash Bros Brawl.

The Intellivision actually belonged to my father and he eventually gave it to me along with the 40 odd games it came with in exchange for the controller based version that had games built into it. Unfortunately years of hard core gaming have done its damage to the Intellivision and it was near impossible use the controllers.

Some games that I would still love to play would have to be Armor Battle, Astrosmash and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin and of course all the ones listed above. Compared to games of today these were simple and fun to play and I found you could really get into them, complete then move on.

I have so many games from systems such as the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 that I haven’t even had time to complete, and when you think of it the Super Nintendo is well over 10 years old.
